The Millard story is, at its heart, a true Australian family success story — built on vision, hard work, resilience, and a passion for creating quality caravans for Aussie families.
It all began in the early 1950s when John Millerd Darlington, while helping his father paint a caravan factory, famously said, “I reckon I could build a better caravan.” With the support of his family, John built his very first plywood caravan in the backyard of the family home in North Ryde, creating the name “Millard” from his own middle name.
What started with caravans displayed for rent on the family’s front lawn quickly grew into one of Australia’s most recognised caravan brands. Joined by his brother Peter and supported by the entire Darlington family, Millard expanded from a small backyard operation into factories at Mortlake, Smithfield, and eventually Campbelltown.
By 1969, Millard employed around 250 staff and was producing approximately 100 caravans every month, offering Australian families an incredible range of around 60 different models. Growth continued through the 1970s, with the Campbelltown factory becoming the largest caravan manufacturing facility in the Southern Hemisphere, employing around 500 people and producing more than 4,000 vans every year.
Millard’s legacy became even more significant following Cyclone Tracy in 1974, when the Australian Government turned to Millard to help provide emergency accommodation for families devastated by the disaster.
Through triumphs and challenges alike, the Millard name has become part of Australia’s touring and caravanning history — a legacy built by family hands, driven by innovation, and remembered by generations of travellers across the country.
Today, Millard remains an important part of Australian caravanning history. It represents the foundations of the industry — built on family values, innovation, and a passion for the open road.
For Coffs Caravan Company, Millard is more than history. It is a reminder of where Australian caravanning began, and the enduring spirit that still drives it forward today.
